What is Zilbrysq (zilucoplan) for?
Zilbrysq (zilucoplan) is a medicine prescribed for the treatment of generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) that are anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibody positive .
Zilbrysq (zilucoplan) is available as a subcutaneous injection (16.6 mg/0.416 mL, 23 mg/0.574 mL, or 32.4 mg/0.81 mL) in single-dose prefilled syringes.
How does Zilbrysq (zilucoplan) work?
Zilbrysq (zilucoplan) is a C5 inhibitor. It prevents nerve and muscle damage in myasthenia gravis by blocking a part of the immune system called complement component 5. This stops the harmful immune response that worsens the disease. By doing so, it reduces symptoms of myasthenia gravis.
Unlike monoclonal antibodies, Zilbrysq (zilucoplan) can be combined with other treatments like IV immunoglobulins and plasma exchange without additional doses.
Where has Zilbrysq (zilucoplan) been approved?
Zilbrysq (zilucoplan) is currently only approved by the FDA in the USA. In Europe, it has received the CHMP’s positive opinion, meaning that it is likely to get EMA marketing authorization by the end of 2023.
