Medical Uses
Korsuva is a kappa opioid receptor agonist used for the treatment of moderate-to-severe pruritus (itching) associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD-aP) in adults undergoing hemodialysis (HD). This medicinal product is not for use in individuals undergoing peritoneal dialysis (fluid taken from the abdomen).
Recommended Dosage: The recommended dosage of Korsuva is 0.5 mcg per kg given by intravenous bolus injection into the venous line of the dialysis circuit post each hemodialysis treatment. In case a regularly scheduled hemodialysis treatment is skipped/missed, resume treatment at the end of the next hemodialysis treatment.
Avoid mixing or diluting korsuva injection 65 mcg/1.3 mL (50 mcg/mL) prior to administration. Use the drug within 60 minutes of syringe preparation.
Warning & Precautions
- Respective patients should not take Korsuva if they are known to be allergic to difelikefalin or any of the other existing ingredients in medicine Korsuva.
- Mental status changes, dizziness, somnolence, and gait disturbances, including falls, may occur in those taking difelikefalin and may subside as time passes with continued therapy. Concomitant use of centrally-acting depressant medicines, opioid analgesics, and sedating antihistamines may boost the likelihood of these side effects.
- Mental status changes, dizziness, and somnolence may occur in those who taking the Korsuva injection. This medicine may impair the physical or mental abilities required to drive a car and operate any machinery. Patients should not drive or operate hazardous machinery until the effect of drugs on a patient’s potential to drive or operate any machinery is known.
- There are no findings regarding the use of difelikefalin in pregnant females. As a precautionary concern, it is best to avoid the use of this medicinal product during pregnancy.
