Medical Uses
Fasenra is an interleukin-5 receptor alpha-directed cytolytic monoclonal antibody (IgG1, kappa) used for the add-on maintenance treatment of patients with severe asthma aged 12 years and older, and with an eosinophilic phenotype.
Limitations of Use: Fasenra is not for treatment of other eosinophilic conditions. This medicine is not for relief of acute bronchospasm or status asthmaticus.
Recommended Dosage: Fasenra injection is for subcutaneous use only. The recommended dose is 30 mg administered once every four (4) weeks for the initial 3 doses, and then once every eight (8) weeks thereafter by subcutaneous injection into the upper arm, thigh, or abdomen.
The injection should be administered by a health specialist. In line with clinical practice, monitoring of patients after the use of biologic agents is recommended.
Before administering, warm Fasenra by leaving the carton at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Administer this medicinal product within 24 hours or discard into a sharps container.
Warning & Precautions
- Use of Fasenra Injection: 30 mg/mL solution in a single-dose prefilled syringe for subcutaneous use is restricted in individuals who have any known hypersensitivity to API benralizumab or any of its excipients.
- Hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., rash, anaphylaxis, angioedema, urticaria) may occur following the use of fasenra 30mg/mL. These reactions may generally occur within hours of use, but in some instances have a delayed onset (i.e., days). In case of hypersensitivity reaction, treatment should be discontinued.
- Do not use Benralizumab to treat acute asthma symptoms or acute exacerbations. Do not use this medicine to treat acute bronchospasm or status asthmaticus. Patients should seek medical advice if their asthma remains uncontrolled or worsens after the start of therapy with Benralizumab.
- Avoid interrupting systemic or inhaled corticosteroids abruptly upon initiation of fasenra uses. Decrements in corticosteroid dose, if apt, must be gradual and performed under the direct supervision of a doctor. Decrement in the dose of corticosteroid may be linked with systemic withdrawal symptoms or unmask conditions previously suppressed by systemic corticosteroid therapy.
- Eosinophils sometimes called eosinophiles or, less commonly, acidophils may be involved in the immunological response to a few helminth infections. Those with known helminth infections were excluded from participation in clinical trials. It is not specified if benralizumab injection will influence a patient’s response against helminth infections.
- Patients with pre-existing helminth infections should be treated before initiating therapy with Fasenra Injection. If patients become infected while on treatment and do not respond to anti-helminth therapy, discontinue therapy with medicine Fasenra 30 mg/mL until infection resolves.
