Medical Uses
Feraccru contains the active pharmaceutical ingredient ferric maltol. Feraccru by Shield Therapeutics plc is an iron-containing medicine used for the treatment of iron deficiency (lack of iron) in adults.
Recommended Dosage: Feraccru is available in capsules (30 mg). The recommended dose is one capsule of Feraccru 30 mg taken orally twice daily, morning and evening, on an empty stomach. The capsules of Feraccru need to be taken whole on an empty stomach (with half a glass of water), as the absorption of iron is scaled down when this medicine is taken with food.
The length of treatment will depend on the severity of the lack of iron, but typically at least 12 weeks of treatment is needed. Treatment with this medicine needs to be continued as long as necessary in order to replenish the body’s iron stores as per blood tests.
Warning & Precautions
- Do not administer the Feraccru capsules in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) flare or in those with hemoglobin (Hb) <9.5 g per dl and with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
- Concomitant administration/use of medicine ferric maltol 30 mg capsules with intravenous iron, methyldopa, dimercaprol, or chloramphenicol is needed to be avoided.
- The medicinal product Feraccru contains lactose. Individuals with rare hereditary complications of total lactase deficiency, galactose intolerance, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not use this medicinal product.
- Feraccru (ferric maltol) contains Sunset Yellow FCF (E 110) and Allura Red AC (E 129): these may be responsible for causing allergic reactions.
- Accidental overdoses of iron-containing products can result in fatal poisoning in children aged below 6 years. Kept the Feraccru 30 mg capsules out of reach of children. In case of an accidental overdose, call a health specialist promptly.
- The medicine ferric maltol is not likely to cause harm to a fetus. If iron deficiency is left untreated during pregnancy, there may be scenarios of anemia, premature birth, or reduced birth weight.
