Medical Uses
Foscavir is an antiviral prescription medication approved by the US FDA for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in individuals with AIDS. Foscavir is also FDA-approved for the treatment of a certain type of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection, named acyclovir resistant mucocutaneous HSV infection, in individuals with weakened immune systems.
Warning & Precautions
- Monitor renal function carefully while on induction and maintenance therapy with foscavir injection.
- Following the first dose, the hydration fluid needs to be administered concurrently with each infusion of foscarnet sodium.
- Care must be considered to infuse the solutions containing foscarnet only into veins with adequate blood flow to permit rapid dilution and distribution to avoid local irritation.
- Patients with foscavir uses should be advised to report signs and symptoms of low ionized calcium such as perioral tingling, numbness in the extremities and parenthesis.
