Skyclarys (omaveloxolone) is a once-daily oral prescription medication for the treatment of Friedreich's ataxia. The medicine is indicated for patients aged 16 years and older.
Skyclarys is available in the form of capsules containing 50 mg of omaveloxolone.
How does Skyclarys (omaveloxolone) work?
The precise mechanism of action of Skyclarys (omaveloxolone) is unknown. The medicine has been shown to activate the Nrf2 pathway, which is involved in the cellular response to oxidative stress.
In clinical trials, patients treated with Skyclarys (omaveloxolone) showed improvement in upright stability, lower and upper limb coordination, mouth and throat function. All of these indicators are part of the modified Friedreich Ataxia Rating Scale (mFARS) commonly used to measure the disease progression.
Where has Skyclarys (omaveloxolone) been approved?
The FDA in the USA granted approval to Skyclarys (omaveloxolone) in February 2023. The medicine's manufacturer, Reata Pharmaceuticals, has also submitted a marketing authorization application to the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
